Focus on Penny Cryer, Construction Administrator

Penny’s title belies the wide range of work she does for the Carnegie Steel Buildings; she is an unsung hero who keeps the wheels turning. Here’s an interview with Penny that reveals a bit more about what she does for all of us.

What brought you to Carnegie Steel Buildings?

I had worked for the same company for over 23 years, which specialised in Garment processing for the big clothing retailers. After being made redundant, I wanted something completely new. So after moving from Yorkshire to Biggin Hill, I went looking for a new challenge. I knew from my interview that Carnegie Steel Buildings was where I wanted to be. I was very excited when I received the job offer. My knowledge of construction was limited, but I had spent most of my career in customer service. So I knew I could use these skills in my new role at Carnegie.

Tell us a bit about what you do day-to-day.

I work behind the scenes at Carnegie, looking after the day-to-day requirements for both the teams in the office and on-site at our projects. Looking after most of the purchasing/hiring requirements, which involve thinking about logistics. I am also the voice on the phone, speaking to our current and future clients.

What keeps you motivated

I absolutely love the challenge of learning a completely new sector, along with never having two days the same. Exceeding customer expectations is my main goal within the company, and my main motivation to learn more every day.

And out of work, what’s the story?

I love everything related to classic cars and motorbikes, so I regularly attend local car shows. Nature is another thing I enjoy, so I taking long walks along the canal makes me happy. Fortunately, I can also visit the woods, and there are many places to leave the world behind for a while. Sounds as if Penny needs a classic 2-seater for a lovely drive in the country lanes (like the one in the picture above). I’m claiming shotgun! Penny regularly exceeds customer service expectations; in fact, it’s one of the things our clients like about us. We take the time to get to know a client’s business so we can be as helpful as possible.
